Manipal has a unique geographical locus between and near to many places of cultural and tourist interest in South India. Manipal itself forms the eastern part of Udupi town, famous for its mutts and Krishna temple. Udupi is also the seat of a prominent stream of medieval Indian philosophy. Goa, with its famous beaches, churches and the Indo-Portuguese heritage is 300 kms away and can be reached by taxi within five hours. Mysore, famous for its cultural and architectural splendour is again a place that can be reached within less than half-day’s travel. It is famous for its palaces and gardens and also one of the most important tourist sites in Asia. Manipal also nestles close to Kerala, the state famed for its greenery, multiculturalism and hospitality. The northern-most tip of Kerala is less than 3 hours’ travel by taxi. Other important scenic, architectural and historical sites in India like Hampi, Gulbarga, Ootacamund, Bangalore, Kodaikanal are within the reach of a night’s travel by bus from Manipal.
